Ubisoft Singapore is leading development on Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a full remake of the 2013 game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, set to release worldwide on July 9, 2026 [1]. Development began in 2023 and uses the latest Anvil engine, the same technology behind Assassin's Creed Shadows (2025), with no original code or assets reused [2, 3, 1].
The remake retains the original open world, narrative, and core gameplay but expands systems including combat, stealth, and navigation [2, 4]. Modern gameplay features are added such as a crouch button, enemy defense bars, improved parkour, dynamic weather, sound-based stealth mechanics, fast travel to the ship, ray-traced lighting, and a shanty player to enhance immersion [5, 4]. However, it removes the modern-day storyline and excludes the Freedom Cry expansion [2, 1].
Paul Knight, game director, said the remake embraces the iconic Caribbean setting and character of Black Flag while aiming to feel like a new Assassin's Creed game. “If you just ignore the number—Assassin’s Creed 4—if you just think about it as Black Flag, it has a lot of things for it. Black Flag has this iconic character that everybody remembers,” Knight said [1]. He added both the original and remake are canon, with the new version serving as the “next modern Assassin’s Creed game” [6].
Creative director Paul Fu emphasized the project is more than a graphical update. “A good remake has to have new content, new systems that expand on these core systems, which is what we aim for in Resynced,” he said [7].
The game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft’s own store [1]. The standard edition is priced at $60, while a special edition costing $70 includes extra cosmetic items. Pre-orders come with bonus outfits [1].
Black Flag Resynced is intended as a full rebuild showcasing updated visuals and gameplay that align with the latest Assassin’s Creed entries. Its July 9 release date closes a 13-year gap since the original 2013 game debuted [2, 1].
