Ubisoft canceled Alterra, an unannounced life simulation game that blended Animal Crossing-style social play with Minecraft-like voxel building, after nearly 3 years of development. Developers were told on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, and no immediate layoffs were reported. Staff were offered transfers to other Ubisoft projects. [1]
Alterra was led by Ubisoft Montreal’s Patrick Redding and lead producer Fabien Lhéraud, according to the report. Ubisoft did not comment directly on the game, but a spokesperson said the company continuously assesses projects at every stage and may stop work if they no longer fit strategic priorities, quality ambitions and long-term market potential. The cancellation adds to a run of cuts and closures at the French publisher in early 2026. In January, Ubisoft canceled Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake and five other games, which triggered strikes. In March, Red Storm studio employees were told they would no longer make games, and 105 workers lost their jobs. [1]
Ubisoft’s portfolio review has already removed several projects this year, and Alterra was the latest to go. [1]
