Valve launched its new Steam Controller on May 4, 2026, targeting PC gamers with a gamepad built for the Steam platform and PC use specifically [1]. The company aims to fill a niche by offering a "Steam-first, PC-first controller," said Valve designer Lawrence Yang, who added, "A lot of the controllers that are on the market right now are made by console makers, and they're making it for their own consoles, not necessarily for PC...The split is kind of telling" [1].

Data from 2024 shows Xbox controllers dominate Steam controller sessions with 59%, followed by PlayStation controllers at 26%, and about 10% from Steam Deck controllers [1]. Steam’s existing player base mostly uses hardware designed for consoles rather than PC-focused gamepads.

Valve designers acknowledge the challenge in balancing features for a PC controller that offers something unique. Engineer Steve Cardinali explained, "I think it's partially hard because if you're trying to make a controller for PC, you have to choose certain buckets that you want to live in-between...We believe in the feature set we're providing, providing gamers with a way to play games in all new ways, and so we see value in it" [1].

Yang added, "I actually don't know why! But we definitely did see an opportunity for a Steam-first, PC-first controller, and that's why we made it" [1].

The new Steam Controller became available for purchase on May 4, 2026 [1]. Valve’s next step will be to monitor adoption rates as players explore the controller’s ability to enhance PC gaming experiences.
