Valve announced Steam Machine pricing starting at $1,049 for the 512GB model, with higher configurations reaching $1,428 including a Steam Controller, on June 22, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4]. The price increase of about 33% from an originally planned $749 reflects ongoing global component shortages and rising costs, a phenomenon Valve calls "RAMnarök" [5, 4, 6]. "The big, number one factor in cost is the components that make up the device... it's definitely more expensive than we hoped," said Yazan Aldehayyat of Valve [4].

Valve said it will limit Steam Machine sales by requiring buyers to have valid Steam accounts in good standing with prior purchases and restrict one signup per household [2]. This controls distribution amid the high price point and limited supply.

Unlike typical console makers, Valve decided not to subsidize Steam Machine hardware prices. They cited a commitment to an open PC ecosystem that allows users to run games on any hardware. "If you buy a game, you should be able to play it on any PC. And a PC is a PC: the second you start locking things into certain SKUs or into certain models, it's not really a PC any more," said Valve's Lawrence Yang [1]. Official statements noted, "If there's anything we're religious about at Valve, it's our belief that open systems are better in the long run, for ourselves and customers," and "We don't want that for PC hardware, and we don't think you should want it either [3, 7]."

Valve said subsidizing hardware often leads to closed systems with exclusive content and consumer lock-in, which contradicts their philosophy of freedom in PC gaming [1, 7]. They view the Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming, not a traditional console, and want customers to freely choose hardware without being locked to one vendor [5, 7].

Valve also claimed the Steam Machine delivers about six times the performance horsepower of its Steam Deck handheld PC [2]. Despite the price being higher than initially intended, Valve considers the Steam Machine a good value compared to similarly configured PCs [2, 4].

Steam Machine reservations open on June 25, 2026, with restrictions in place to manage availability [2]. Production has ramped up after the first public showing in late 2025, when component shortages first affected pricing and availability [4, 6].
