At least 13 people, including one child, died and about 39 others were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region overnight from August 9 to 10. The strike hit industrial and civilian areas, including the Taneco oil refinery, one of Russia's largest and most advanced refineries located in the city [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Russian authorities declared a day of mourning in Tatarstan following the attack. Rustam Minnikhanov, head of the region, said, "This is a tremendous pain for all of us" [1]. The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation, labeling the strike a "terrorist attack". Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said, "Civilian individuals who were not involved in any military operations were present" during the strike [1].
Ukrainian forces have intensified long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and logistical sites in recent months, causing fuel shortages in some Russian regions [1, 6, 2, 3, 5]. Russian air defenses claim to have shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight during this period [1, 5, 7].
Kyiv has yet to officially comment on this specific drone attack [1, 2].
Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least six people and injured several in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia overnight August 10, as Kyiv accused Russia of using North Korean ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "For the first time, Russia cannot wage war without reinforcements from North Korea... The city was struck with North Korean ballistic missiles, Zircons, and guided aerial bombs. It was a vicious attack, calculated to inflict maximum damage specifically on civilian infrastructure" [8, 9, 10, 11]. Russia denies using North Korean missiles but continues strikes on Ukrainian civilian and military targets [8, 9].
Ukrainian drone attacks also killed one person and injured two in Russia’s Voronezh region, damaging warehouses including those of the online retailer Wildberries [8, 9, 12].
On both sides, drone and missile strikes have continued with deaths reported in cities such as Novorossiysk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Mykolaiv over the past days [1, 8, 9, 10, 12, 7].
Russian authorities continue their investigation into the Nizhnekamsk strike while Tatarstan remains in mourning [2, 3, 5]. Ukrainian attacks on key energy infrastructure are likely to remain a focus amid the ongoing conflict.
