The cruise ship Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, was confined in Bordeaux, France, after a suspected norovirus outbreak affected passengers and crew aboard the vessel. More than 1,700 people, including 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members, were initially prohibited from disembarking by French authorities following the ship's arrival on May 12 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11].

The Ambition set sail from the Shetland Islands, Scotland, on May 6, making stops at Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest before reaching Bordeaux [2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. About 50 passengers showed symptoms consistent with norovirus, a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. By May 13, health officials reported the number of symptomatic individuals had increased to around 80 [8].

One elderly passenger, approximately 90 years old, died on board. Several sources identified the death as suspected norovirus-related, while the ship operator said the cause was cardiac arrest unrelated to the viral outbreak [s1,s2,s3,s4,s5,s7,s9,s10,s11; s6,s8].

French health officials confirmed norovirus infection after laboratory testing, describing the situation as a viral gastrointestinal illness without severe cases [6, 8]. Some asymptomatic passengers were allowed to leave the ship after quarantine measures were partly eased, but symptomatic individuals remain isolated onboard [6, 8].

The ship operator cited the introduction of enhanced hygiene measures on board, including suspending self-service food, packaging utensils, and closing pools. Passenger Seos Guilidhe said, "We adopted additional health measures on board. The situation is not as bad as during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. People live normally." Later, Guilidhe added, "We have been allowed to disembark; restrictions lifted" [6, 8].

French authorities stated there is no connection between this norovirus outbreak and a previous hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-owned Hondius cruise ship [2, 8, 11].

The Ambition was originally scheduled to continue its journey from Bordeaux to Spain after health clearance [2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11].
