The Israeli military attacked and intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla on May 18, 2026, in international waters, detaining around 422 activists on board who sought to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. About 50 vessels carried 428 activists from 44 countries, setting sail from Marmaris, Türkiye on May 14-15 [2, 4, 5]. Among those detained were 85 Turkish nationals [2, 3, 4].

Reports indicate that many activists faced physical violence and mistreatment during detention by Israeli forces, with injuries sustained in the operation [6, 7, 8, 4, 5, 9]. Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran described the conduct of Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir as "barbarity" and "among the darkest pages of history" after allegations of verbal and physical violence against detainees [7, 8].

Türkiye condemned the interception as illegal, labeling it piracy and a violation of international law. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said, "We condemn in the strongest terms this act of piracy, which clearly violates international law," and called the aggression a "global threat" extending beyond Gaza to the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria [1, 2, 7, 8]. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed that "Israel’s attacks on the aid mission will not stop international solidarity with Palestinians, or the pursuit of justice" [1].

Türkiye coordinated diplomatic efforts and arranged special Turkish Airlines flights to ensure the safe return of the detained citizens and other activists [2, 10, 3, 4]. On May 21, three flights arrived in Istanbul carrying back 422 activists, including those injured who were taken to hospitals for treatment [3, 4, 5, 9]. By May 22, 41 injured activists had been discharged from Istanbul hospitals while 12 remained hospitalized [9].

This flotilla was not the first to face Israeli military action. A previous part of the Global Sumud mission was intercepted on April 29, 2026, when 177 activists were detained and mistreated [5]. The Global Sumud Flotilla has since become a symbol of the geopolitical and humanitarian tensions surrounding Gaza and Israel’s blockade [11, 5].

The next milestone is expected on June 10, when ongoing diplomatic consultations on the fate of remaining detainees and humanitarian aid delivery are scheduled to continue.
