Japan’s elderly and disabled care sector is short of workers, and Tokyo-based Visionary has turned to well-toned young men to help meet demand. [1]

One of those carers is Tatsumi Hokuto, 27, whose bodybuilding physique and seven years in Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force now set him apart in a job that also relies on strength. [1]

Hokuto said he likes the mix of lifting weights and looking after clients. “I enjoy my job because it allows me to balance what I love, strength training, along with my job,” he said. [1]

He said the work gives him a sense that his training has a wider purpose. “Doing this makes me feel that my muscles are benefiting people and society,” Hokuto said. [1]

Visionary’s hiring approach comes as Japan struggles to find enough workers for care homes and other services for older people and those with disabilities. [1]

Hokuto’s background in the military and in bodybuilding has made him a visible example of the company’s strategy. The care job lets him use physical strength in daily support work while keeping up his training outside work. [1]
