Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone barrage against Kyiv and its surrounding areas during the night of August 19 to early August 20, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The attacks involved a combination of ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, as well as over 168 drones, targeting both military and civilian infrastructure [5, 6].
At least six people were killed in the strikes, with some reports putting the death toll as high as 17. The Brovary district outside Kyiv was hit by a missile that killed one man and wounded another [1, 2].
The attacks damaged multiple residential buildings, including a nine-storey apartment block in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district. A children’s hospital, a school, warehouses, and industrial facilities also sustained damage [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10]. Fires broke out following the strikes, and power outages affected roughly 90,000 homes, hampering rescue efforts to extract survivors from the rubble [1, 3, 4, 5, 10].
Ukraine’s air force reported a recent barrage totaling more than 1,550 attack drones, 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 62 missiles. Kyiv’s air defenses intercepted many drones and cruise missiles, but some ballistic missiles penetrated the defenses [1, 5, 6]. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized allies for inadequate deliveries of Patriot interceptor missiles, saying the shortage had cost lives and weakened Ukraine’s ability to stop ballistic missile attacks. He said, "Each additional missile saves the lives of our people" and lamented that "the world’s response to such attacks is not always adequate" [4, 5, 6, 10].
Russian strikes also targeted military depots, drone component factories, and logistics hubs in the Kyiv region [1, 3, 5]. The attacks triggered air alerts in neighboring countries such as Romania and Moldova after drones crossed their airspace, though no casualties were reported there [1, 3].
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 21 a day of mourning for the victims of the attacks [3, 4, 5]. Rescue and repair operations continue as authorities assess the damage and search for more survivors [1, 3, 4].
