The US military conducted a series of strikes on southern Iran targeting an airport, railway station, and two bridges near the Strait of Hormuz on July 16, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure and killing at least seven people in Hormozgan province [1, 2, 3]. One of the strikes near the Shahid Baqaei children’s cancer hospital in Ahvaz forced the emergency evacuation of 211 pediatric chemotherapy patients. Iran condemned the strike as a "barbaric war crime" and accused the US of targeting healthcare facilities. Esmaeil Baqaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said, "This barbaric attack... caused severe suffering and anxiety upon the hospitalised children... constitutes a cowardly war crime against the most innocent of human beings — children who are bravely fighting for their lives" [1, 10, 11, 6, 12].
The US said the strikes aimed to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz [1, 4, 5]. Despite a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding intended to end conflict, attacks from both sides continued, escalating tension in the region [2, 8, 5, 6].
Additionally, Yemen’s Houthi leader warned of targeting Saudi vital facilities if Riyadh escalates its operations in Yemen [1]. Meanwhile, Syria announced it foiled a missile shipment to Hezbollah at its border with Iraq on July 16 amid regional tensions [2].
