Vote counting began Monday in four Indian states and one federally administered territory in regional elections seen as a key test of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. [1]

Polling had been held in phases since early April in Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. [1]

Early results in Assam showed the BJP leading in 78 of 126 seats, while Congress was ahead in 21. [1]

In West Bengal, early results showed the BJP leading in 192 seats and the All India Trinamool Congress ahead in 94. [1]

In Tamil Nadu, early results showed the regional Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party in the lead. [1]

In Kerala, the Indian National Congress was ahead in early results. [1]

In Puducherry, the All India NR Congress, which is part of Modi’s National Democratic Alliance, was leading in preliminary results. [1]
