The Bank of Scotland unveiled a limited-edition £20 banknote on May 25 featuring artwork inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick goal against Denmark [1].
The note celebrates Scotland’s first qualification for the men’s FIFA World Cup since 1998. Scotland secured their spot at the 2026 tournament with a 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow in November 2025. McTominay opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick in that decisive match [2, 3, 1, 4].
Only 100 of these commemorative notes were printed. Of those, 50 will be sold through collector auctions, prize draws, and exclusive pop-up events in Edinburgh and Glasgow [2, 3, 1, 4]. Proceeds from these sales will support Crisis Scotland, a charity focused on helping people experiencing homelessness [2, 1].
The banknote design merges traditional Scottish elements with imagery of McTominay’s goal and also features the Forth Rail Bridge, a national landmark [2, 3, 1, 4]. Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said Scott’s overhead kick is “already regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ever goals” and expressed gratitude for his help in raising funds for homelessness support [2].
McTominay himself called the honour “incredibly special” and “a bit surreal,” reflecting how rare such moments are in football. He said the goal “belongs to everyone who follows the team” and welcomed the chance to support Crisis Scotland through the banknote project [2, 3, 1]. He also said he wants to “go to the World Cup and give a great account of ourselves” and demonstrate Scotland’s quality on the global stage [3].
The 2026 World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Scotland will compete in Group C against Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil [2, 3, 4]. Online auctions and prize draws for the banknotes will continue until 11:00 on June 26 [2, 1].
