Channel 5 has secured rights to show daily highlights of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by sublicensing from TNT Sports, which holds the live broadcast rights [1, 2]. TNT Sports, owned by Warner Bros Discovery, will provide more than 600 hours of live coverage on TV and HBO Max [1, 2].

The BBC will not broadcast any coverage of the Games, ending its uninterrupted 72-year history of airing the event since 1954 [1, 2]. The broadcaster decided against acquiring highlights rights after talks with TNT Sports, citing financial pressures and a strategic shift towards digital clips aimed at younger audiences [1, 2].

The BBC announced plans in May 2026 to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs as part of a £500 million efficiency drive, which has heavily impacted its sports budget [1, 2]. Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC’s director of sport, said the broadcaster is "focusing on digital content to attract a younger audience, which has led to a new focus on clips rights, particularly in football" [1].

Alongside stepping away from the Commonwealth Games, the BBC has also exited broadcasting the University Boat Race, which moved to Channel 4, and will present FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage from its Salford studios rather than on-site [1, 2]. The BBC has recently secured live rights to Bundesliga, Women’s Champions League, and other football and rugby events as part of its digital-first sports strategy [1, 2].

TNT Sports secured the live rights to the Commonwealth Games in 2025 by outbidding the BBC [1, 2]. The Games in Glasgow are scheduled to begin on July 23, 2026 [2]. Channel 5’s highlights will provide the main free-to-air window for British audiences to follow the event.
