Jonas Vingegaard of the Visma-Lease a Bike team won the 2026 Giro d’Italia on May 31, securing his place as only the eighth male cyclist to win all three Grand Tours: Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. The 29-year-old Dane finished with a winning margin of about five minutes and 22 to 33 seconds over Austria’s Felix Gall, who took second place [2, 3, 4, 6]. Australian Jai Hindley finished third, roughly six and a half minutes behind Vingegaard [2, 3, 6].

Vingegaard dominated the race, winning five stages in total, including the crucial penultimate mountain stage on May 30 where he soloed to victory at Piancavallo and extended his overall lead [1, 3, 4, 6]. The final stage in Rome on May 31 was largely processional, ending in a bunch sprint won by Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan, who completed the 192-kilometer course in 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 50 seconds [2, 4, 6].

Vingegaard overcame serious injuries sustained in a 2024 crash to regain top form and claim the Giro [2, 5]. He is now the only active male cyclist to have captured all three Grand Tours, setting him apart from his main rival, multiple Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, who did not participate in this Giro [5, 6]. "Winning all three is very special for me, it’s difficult to find the words to describe it," Vingegaard said after the race [4]. Earlier, he added, "I’m a cyclist, I like to win, I want to win as many races as possible and we decided to go for it again today" [3].

Felix Gall achieved his career-best Grand Tour finish by coming in second [4, 5, 6]. Visma chief Richard Plugge said, "Jonas is getting even stronger after this. We planned it so that he will be at his peak in the Tour de France, so we’re looking forward to that fight" [6].

The 2026 Tour de France begins on July 4, where Vingegaard and Pogacar are expected to face off in a highly anticipated rivalry [2, 5, 6].
