Olav Kooij of the Netherlands claimed victory on stage five of the 2026 Tour de France after a hectic sprint finish following a crash about five kilometres from the finish line [1, 2, 3]. The 158.3-kilometre stage ran from Lannemezan to Pau [1, 3].
Max Kanter of Germany took second place, while Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier came third on the stage [1, 3]. Baptiste Veistroffer was the only rider in the breakaway, but he was caught with roughly 14 kilometres remaining [2, 3].
Norwegian rider Torstein Traeen kept the yellow jersey despite being caught up and delayed in the crash that disrupted the closing kilometres [1, 2, 3]. Traeen leads the overall classification by 28 seconds over American Sean Quinn [1, 3].
The reigning champion Tadej Pogacar and other top contenders finished 14 seconds behind Kooij on the stage [1, 3]. Meanwhile, Remco Evenepoel continues to race strongly with aims for the podium, despite past struggles on climbs such as the Tourmalet [2].
Kooij spoke about his win as a big return after difficulties earlier in the season. "After a couple of hard days already, we had to wait to today to get this first chance to sprint in the Tour, and to immediately win is unbelievable," he said [1]. He added the victory was important following a tough spring and illness, emphasizing the importance of self-belief and support from a few close people [2, 3].
Kooij completed the stage in 3 hours, 29 minutes and 7 seconds [1].
