Scottie Scheffler clinched his second FedEx Cup title on August 30 by winning the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta [1, 2, 3]. Starting the final round three shots behind overnight leader Viktor Hovland, Scheffler shot a 4-under-par 66, the only round under par among the final pairing, to finish three strokes ahead of Hovland [1, 3]. Hovland carded a two-over-par 72 on the final day and ended the tournament at 13 under par [1, 3].
American debutant Ryan Gerard finished third at 12 under par [1, 3]. Scheffler earned $10 million in prize money for the win, which marked the 22nd PGA Tour victory of his career [1, 3]. He joined Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only golfers to win multiple FedEx Cup titles [1, 2].
With this victory, Scheffler also became the PGA Tour's all-time leader in career on-course earnings, surpassing Tiger Woods with about $130.4 million in total earnings [3]. Prior to the Tour Championship, Scheffler won the opening leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at TPC Southwind in Memphis by eight strokes and tied for 12th at the BMW Championship despite battling hand, foot and mouth disease [3].
Reflecting on the win, Scheffler said, "To come from behind and be able to win tournament is a really cool feeling. There were a lot of talented guys in front of me on the leaderboard. I was fortunate to get off to a good start and put myself in the mix. It's a gift to be out here on tour. Each and every day I'm going to try to give it my best" [1].
Scheffler is expected to be named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the fifth consecutive season when the award is announced in December [3].
