Waerenskjold launched a surprise long-range sprint with about 400 meters to go, taking the win by nearly a bike length in a chaotic, disorganized sprint finish. No team could form a proper sprint train, allowing Waerenskjold to seize the opportunity [1, 3, 4]. He described the victory as his biggest so far, saying, “It means everything, it’s my biggest win so far. There are two or three guys here who are faster, but if I’m lucky and have a good sprint like today, then it’s possible” [1].

The early part of the stage featured a four-man breakaway including Julian Alaphilippe, who was dropped approximately 38 km before the finish [2, 3]. In the sprint for the remaining podium places, Olav Kooij of the Netherlands finished second.
