Tadej Pogacar crashed during stage 8 of the Vuelta a España on August 29, 2026, suffering a fractured collarbone, a stable cervical spine fracture, a concussion, and multiple abrasions while leading the race by nearly four minutes [1, 2, 3]. The 27-year-old five-time Tour de France champion was aiming to complete a career set of Grand Tour wins by taking the Vuelta title [1, 2, 3].

Pogacar underwent surgery to repair his fractured collarbone in early September and will miss the rest of the cycling season to allow full recovery, a decision made jointly by UAE Team Emirates and medical staff [1, 2, 3]. Team medical director Adrian Rotunno said, "Tadej is progressing well following surgery and we are very satisfied with his recovery to this point. However, given the combination of his injuries … we have taken the decision, together with Tadej, that he will not return to competition this season" [2].

As a result, Pogacar will miss key upcoming events, including the 2026 World Championships in Montreal this month, as well as the European Championships and Il Lombardia races scheduled in October [1, 2, 3].

At the time of his crash, Pogacar held a commanding lead of about 3 minutes and 50 seconds in the Vuelta, showcasing his dominant form in the race [1, 2]. Despite the setback, Pogacar expressed pride in his season's achievements and focus on recovery: "Of course, this isn't the way I wanted my season to finish. Right now, the most important thing is to recover properly and give my body the time it needs. It has been a season with many special moments and I'm proud of what we achieved together. Now I'll focus on getting healthy, supporting the guys from home, and coming back next year ready for what's ahead" [1].

UAE Team Emirates confirmed they have extended Pogacar's contract through 2032, with Pogacar stating, "From the beginning, this team has felt like home for me. We have grown together over the years and shared some incredible moments, so I’m very happy to extend my contract until 2032. There is still a lot I want to achieve in this sport and I believe this is the right place to do it. I’m very grateful for the trust the team has shown in me and excited about what we can continue to build together" [1, 3]. Team principal Mauro Gianetti added, "Tadej has been central to the journey and development of this team, and we are extremely proud that this relationship will continue through 2032" [3].

Pogacar's recovery and rehabilitation will be the focus for the remainder of 2026, with a return to racing expected next season.
