Chelsea have appointed former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a four-year contract starting July 1, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. Alonso, 44, will replace interim manager Calum McFarlane, who took charge after Liam Rosenior was sacked in April 2026 following about three months in charge [9, 2, 3, 5, 6].
The announcement came one day after Chelsea lost the 2026 FA Cup final 1-0 to Manchester City on May 15 [1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 8]. Chelsea suffered a turbulent 2025-26 Premier League campaign, finishing ninth, well short of European qualification [1, 4, 11, 7]. Since BlueCo acquired the club in 2022, Chelsea have had five permanent managers including Alonso: Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior, and now Alonso [1, 4, 10, 11, 7, 8].
Alonso brings experience from his recent spells managing Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid. He led Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2024 and also won the German Cup with them, before leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent in January 2026 after less than eight months as head coach [1, 2, 10, 8]. As a player, Alonso made 210 appearances for Liverpool over five seasons, winning the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA Cup [2, 4, 10, 7].
Chelsea reportedly gave Alonso assurances over significant control of recruitment and signings as part of the deal [9, 10]. Talks with Alonso and other candidates began in April following Rosenior’s dismissal [9, 10]. Despite speculation, there has been no indication Liverpool are pursuing Alonso [9, 10].
Alonso expressed pride in his new role: "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies... now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies," he said [2].
Alonso’s four-year contract will begin on July 1, as Chelsea prepare for the 2026-27 season.
