Verstappen said he was "closer to retiring than changing teams" and denied any desire to join rival squads such as Mercedes or McLaren, despite widespread speculation during the year. Earlier in the 2026 season, Verstappen told Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies not to discuss his future because he was uncertain about continuing in Formula One, reflecting his frustrations with new engine rules that increased the electric components and energy recovery systems. This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue," he said [7].
