Singapore started testing the ERP 2 system on June 1, 2026, inviting 1,000 motorists to trial features such as satellite-based tolling and ERP alerts on expressways and arterial roads [1, 2, 3]. The trial group includes passenger cars, motorcycles, taxis, and commercial vehicles [2].
The new system will replace the existing gantry-based ERP, which has been in use since 1998, with a fully satellite-based platform launching nationwide on January 1, 2027 [2, 4, 5]. ERP 2 will provide "ERP Ahead" alerts about 200 meters before charging points on expressways and 60 meters before on arterial roads, enabling drivers to adjust routes in advance [2, 3]. The current ERP gantries will be gradually removed, with operating hours and toll rates displayed on on-board units (OBUs) or compatible apps [2, 3].
More than 96% of Singapore’s 960,000 vehicles are already equipped with ERP 2-compatible OBUs, enabling smooth system adoption [4, 5]. From June 15, the trial also began testing border toll payments integrated with ERP 2 on OBUs [2, 4].
A key new feature is roadside electronic parking (REP), which allows motorists to pay for parking via the OBU display by selecting car park locations and starting or stopping parking sessions automatically. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said, "Motorists have to confirm the start of a parking session as it verifies their intention to park and gives them control over when the parking session begins, similar to the Parking.sg app" [1].
The REP trial will begin in August 2026 at 644 designated locations covering about 19,000 roadside parking lots across Singapore, involving the same group of 1,000 trial participants [1].
The authorities are also testing new ERP road markings along roads to replace gantry signage after removal. These trials include blue oval ERP markings, blue paint strips, and dashed lane lines. Some drivers expressed concerns; a 66-year-old private-hire driver said he noticed the blue oval only about 20 meters before, and worried about visibility and slipperiness of the paint when wet [3].
The ERP 2 trial is scheduled to run for about six months through November 2026, with feedback guiding final adjustments before the January 2027 nationwide rollout [2, 4, 5].
