Joe Ziegler, game director for Bungie's Marathon, announced on July 17, 2026, that he is leaving the studio less than four months after the game's March launch [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Ziegler said he is "heading to something new, somewhere else" and promised updates on his next steps soon [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. In his statement, he said, "Passing the torch of Game Director to the very capable and amazing hands of Del Chafe III, who will guide the game forward alongside the Creative Director Julia Nardin" and added, "I'm proud of them and I'm excited to see them helm the future of this crazy little world we've created together" [1, 3].

Del Chafe III previously served as assistant game director and will now lead the Marathon project alongside Julia Nardin [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Marathon, launched in March 2026 through Bungie and Sony, has struggled to maintain player engagement. Its peak daily Steam players reached 77,358 at launch but dropped to around 12,000 in the 30 days before July 2026, with daily counts falling further to between 5,000 and 6,000 recently [1, 6]. Despite reportedly selling over 2 million copies, the game’s player base on Steam has declined significantly since release [6].

Sony completed substantial layoffs at Bungie in June and July 2026, affecting most of the Destiny 2 and some Marathon teams [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]. The company also announced an end to Destiny 2 updates, focusing renewed attention on Marathon as a critical franchise for Bungie amid restructuring [1, 2, 4, 5, 6]. Sony reported a $765 million impairment loss in May linked to Bungie's underperformance [3].

Marathon has been experimenting with new features to reverse its downturn. From July 21 to August 4, 2026, the game is running Vault Breaker, an experimental roguelite PvE mode, aiming to boost interest and player engagement [1, 4, 5].

The departure of Ziegler follows the earlier exit of former Marathon director Christopher Barrett, who was fired for misconduct and later settled a lawsuit against Bungie and Sony for an undisclosed amount [1, 2, 3].

The management shuffle at Bungie and Marathon will continue as Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin take charge during the Vault Breaker event and steer Marathon’s next phases.
